Logar Districts on the Edge of Collapse: Officials
Logar Districts on the Edge of Collapse: Officials

Afghan Members of Parliament and Logar provincial council members have raised their voices in concern of the possible collapse of Logar's districts in the hands of armed opposition.

According to the government officials, most parts of Charkh, Kharwar and Azra districts are under the control of the armed opponents, stressing that the lack of security in these districts will create a security crisis.

"More than 95 percent of Charkh, Kharwar and Azra are in the control of government opposition groups," Logar provincial representative Akbar Stanikzai said. "We have asked the government to pay close attention to the insecure areas of Logar."

The growths in insurgency and armed opposition groups have increased since the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) have taken security responsibility of the province.

Provincial Council Deputy Adalat Abdul Rahimzai warned that if Logar's security situation continues to be overlooked that insecurity will continue to increase not just in Logar, but its neighboring provinces such as the Afghan capital, Kabul.

"The reason behind the insecurity in Kabul is connected to the insecurity in Logar," Rahimzai said. "If tight security is not provided in Logar, then Kabul will be affected as well. So we ask the government to deploy more forces to the province."

Acting Governor Niaz Mohammad Amiri confirms the increase of intensified armed opposition activities, but denied the collapse of the districts.

"We have seen an increase in threats in the mentioned districts," Amiri said. "The enemies are using civilian homes as their shields. We cannot allow this to continue, but it has become a serious challenge for us," referring to the lack of security provided to the districts.

The people of the country expected with the establishment of the National Unity Government and signing of both security pacts—Bilateral Security Agreement and the Status of Forces Agreement—that the security of the country will improve, instead the security institutions and leadership of the acting ministers have weakened the state of the country.
